The smiley package was the first non-free Everybody Edits feature. It was added on July 11, 2010, when the game began using over 6TB of bandwidth a month, when donations showed not to be enough to keep the game afloat. See Smiley.

Originally, the price for the smilies were $1 USD, but you had to login to Facebook to be able to buy them. Starting August 1st 2010, the smiley package was to cost $1 USD, but instead the smiley package was made available for any donated amount. When the Beta version of Everybody Edits came out, the individual smiley package offer was removed and bundled with the $1 Beta price.
